Nineteenth-Century Epic
The Cambridge Victorian Studies Group is hosting an afternoon symposium entitled ‘Nineteenth-Century Epic’ on May 2 at Newnham College, Cambridge. We invite anybody with an interest in the subject to attend. The speakers and papers are as follows: Richard Jenkyns (Classics, Oxford) – respondent; Simon Dentith (English Literature, Reading), ‘William Norris, “The Great Story of the North”, and the Barbaric Past’; Michael Wheeler (English Literature), ‘The Roaring Cataract: Religious Epic in the Nineteenth Century’; David Gange (History, Cambridge),’Odysseus in Eden: Milton and the Old Testament in Late Nineteenth-Century Homer Scholarship’; Ralph O’Connor (History, Aberdeen), ‘The Epic of Earth History’; Vybarr Cregan-Reid (English Literature, Kent), ‘Gilgamesh, Origins and Endings’.
All are welcome to attend. There is no charge, and it will run from 2-5.30pm. Places are limited, however, so to register please email admin@victorians.group.cam.ac.uk as soon as possible.
