Abstract
The recent detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from the LIGO -Virgo Collaboration have kicked off an exciting new era in gravitational physics, astrophysics and cosmology. This would not have been possible if our laser-interferometric GW detectors had not reached a sensitivity good enough to measure length deformations at the astonishing accuracy of one part in 10^{21}. Having access to this precious data only gets us half of the way to extracting quantitative scientific results from it. In this talk I will briefly discuss the principles of gravitational wave detection and will demonstrate some of the statistical methods used in GW data analysis, for the detection of signals and the inference on the properties of their source.
