Pixels detectors in particle physics and beyond

Abstract
One of the reasons why pixel detectors became so successful in particle physics, is that much logic can be squeezed inside a few tens of microns of silicon. Such intelligent pixels not only allowed us to reach unprecedented capabilities at collider experiments, but are also finding their way into an ever growing number of applications. How do they work? What can they be used for? How can we improve them? Based on my personal experience, I will show a few examples of the directions that pixel detectors R&D is taking in particle physics and beyond.
