While many consumer products appear mundane, predicting their behavior both in manufacturing processes and in use is very complex. Most real products are multi-component systems that are either polymer solutions, suspensions, surfactant solutions with complex phase behavior, or a combination of all of these. Virtually all are shear thinning, and many are either viscoelastic or thixotropic. Opportunities to understand free surface flow in general and high speed jets in specific will be discussed, as well as mixing criteria, emulsification, and coupled heat and mass transfer with a flexible porous solid.
