Abstract
Grand unified theories and many other quantum field theories predict the existence of stable magnetic monopoles or other topological solitons. They are usually studied at classical level, and quantum corrections are only known in supersymmetric theories or at leading order in perturbation theory in simple toy models. I show how masses and certain other properties of quantum solitons can be calculated fully non-perturbatively using lattice Monte Carlo simulations and present results for ‘t Hooft-Polyakov monopoles in SU(2) theory. I will also discuss possible uses of this to understand confinement and other non-perturbative properties of gauge field theories.
