I will describe new results concerning embedding accelerating cosmological epochs (inflationary or dark energy-dominated) in models with extra dimensions. With weak assumptions on the higher-dimensional theory, one can reverse-engineer its properties based on simple features of the four-dimensional cosmology. In a large family of models one can show that the null energy condition must be violated to achieve nearly de Sitter expansion. I will discuss the relation of these results to existing “no-go” theorems. I will also describe work in progress concerning observational connections, and some open problems.
