Abstract
Improvisation has been explained as an activity that is created spontaneously, without preparation, in the moment. It can be enacted as an expression of original ideas and feelings, the reiteration, application, exploration and transformation of existing ideas, or the synthesis of disparate ideas. The ideas and feelings expressed are influenced by preconditions such as uniqueness, context, motivation, and intended outcomes. In this seminar, we will discuss a framework for conceptualizing improvisation study intended to broaden our understandings, inform our research methodology, and deepen our analysis and interpretation of collected data.
A former public school choral director, Dr. Leila Heil currently serves as Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA .
