Abstract
Possibly the most popular ‘story’ that is known about Galileo, and it is basically wrong, misunderstood, and misses the point. Most of what has been written about this simply echos subsequent (17th century) protestant anti-Catholic and (18th century) enlightenment anti-Church rhetoric; the real story is much more interesting and very amusing … and very Italian. Expect an outrageous lecture.
