Abstract
The phase-field method provides a diffuse interface approach to the modelling and simulation of phase-change problems. For accuracy it is desirable for the interface to be as narrow as possible and so the use of mesh adaptivity in this region is quite natural. If the solver is not fully implicit however the very fine mesh in the interface region can place excessive stability restrictions on the maximum time step that may be taken. This talk will illustrate some extreme examples of this phenomenon and demonstrate how the problem can be efficiently overcome through a combination of an adaptive stiff time integration scheme and an adaptive nonlinear multigrid solver. The effectiveness of the resulting algorithm, and implementation, will be demonstrated through the solution of some severe multi-scale problems arising in the solidification of dilute binary alloys.
