Abstract: Ubiquitous Computing inherently involves the deployment of systems ‘outside the lab’ in challenging settings and on a scale difficult to resource in academic environments. Without such deployments however, researchers cannot hope to address the real world concerns endemic in moving beyond research testbeds and prototypes and toward truly Ubiquitous Computing. In this talk we focus on the series of deployment led projects at Lancaster that have led us to ‘the e-Campus’ – an ambitious project that aims to create a ‘grid of general purpose interactive public displays’ in public spaces around the University Campus. We report on our experiences to date and the challenges posed to infrastructure designers in developing platforms to support Ubiquitous Computing deployments.
Bio: Adrian’s research focuses on system support for mobile and ubiquitous computing. In the past he has worked on open distributed systems support for collaborative mobile applications (PhD thesis), service discovery (SSDI), context-aware mobile guides, and smart environments and situated displays (Equator). Most recently he’s working on developing a systems platform to support the deployment of a situated public display network on campus (e-Campus).
