The Journey of Human Early Development: from Gametes to Embryos and the Germline Specification
- 👤 Speaker: Dr. Marta Shahbazi (PDN) & Dr. Naoko Irie (Gurdon)
- 📅 Date & Time: Wednesday 23 January 2019, 18:30 - 20:00
- 📍 Venue: Postdoc Centre, Biomedical Campus, Bay 13, Hills Road, Cambridge CB2 0SP
Abstract
The journey of human development is initiated with the fertilization of the egg and sperm. However, the basis remains poorly understood due to the limited experimental material. Recent advances are revealing how the fertilized human egg gives rise to a complex embryo composed of different structures and cell types, including the gamete lineage.
Our first speaker will present a new method to culture human embryos until embryonic day 13 in vitro, describe the transformations that embryos undergo, and explore the potential causes of early pregnancy loss.
Our second speaker will: introduce the latest knowledge of human early germline development, describe the unique molecular regulation for lineage specification, and Discuss the technical challenges and the future of in vitro gametogenesis.
