Abstract
The epigenetic phenomenon of position effect variegation in Drosophila has been instrumental in the elucidation of the histone code. We have shown that this phenomenon is conserved in mammals, can be induced by pathological triplet repeat expansions and differs between the sexes. These findings have implications for understanding pathological gene silencing and sex bias in health and disease.
