Abstract
Two years ago, a detection of the 21 cm power spectrum from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) seemed only a matter of time. The PAPER team had demonstrated an approach that appeared highly robust against instrument-related systematic errors, placing limits on the 21 cm signal that were orders of magnitude below those from other experiments. Now, in 2019, the PAPER results have been retracted, and all experiments seem stuck orders of magnitude above both their theoretical sensitivities and any potential 21 cm signal. In this brief presentation, I’ll try to answer three key questions: (1) What happened in the PAPER analysis? (2) What repercussions does PAPER have for HERA and SKA ? and (3) What do I view as the path forward to a 21 cm EoR detection?
