Abstract

Professor Oliver Rackham, Master of Corpus Christy College, will give a lecture to the Hellenic Society titled:

‘Goats, Sugar and Golf: sustainability and the Cretan landscape’

The Lecture will be held on Wednesday, May 21, in the Fisher Building, St. John’s College, at 6:00 pm.

Professor Rackham is a botanist and ecologist who has worked in the history of vegetation and landscape of Britain, the Mediterranean and the United States. He has approached the changes of the Greek landscape in a unique way, combining the influences of climate, geology, wildfires and human activities. Recently he organized a petition against one of the biggest touristic developments ever planned in Greece, which attempts to insert golf-courses and hotels in a protected (Natura 2000), archaeologically important remote area of Crete.
