This talk urges the importance of 1940s—South Asia’s most turbulent decade—as fundamental to understanding South Asian cityscapes.

The middle decades of the twentieth century not only brought about the end of colonial rule and independence in the Indian subcontinent, but also produced massive population movements, unprecedented state control over economy and society, and severe anxieties about urban space.
