The energetics of moving between statistically steady states in flows driven by buoyancy and wind

Abstract
Flows in confined spaces that are driven by internal buoyancy and external wind can possess multiple steady states. In this talk we will discuss the robustness of such systems by quantifying their propensity to switch between steady states when they are subjected to temporal changes in the wind. The specific case we consider is flow in an `emptying filling box’, consisting of a single volume with high- and low-level openings, driven by an isolated internal source of buoyancy and an opposing wind. By considering the system’s energetics and phase space, we explain why the ventilation of the resulting stratified system is less susceptible to being permanently reversed by the wind than the ventilation of a space with uniform buoyancy.
