Abstract
The talk will be given by Julian Lamb BSc CEng MICE (Construction Director, Integrated Delivery Team) and Mike Evans BEng MSc CEng MICE FCIHT (Highways England, Strategic Stakeholder Manager).
The A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon Improvement Scheme is currently the largest road construction project in the UK and at a cost of ÂŖ1.5b is one the most expensive new additions to the strategic road network for many years. The scheme will transform what has been a well-known congestion problem in Cambridgeshire that goes back to the 1980s.
Mike Evans has been involved with the current scheme and its forerunners since the early 2000s; he will talk through the history of the scheme. This will include the many false starts and previous cancellations, the work done on alternative modes of transport and the other parallel pieces of infrastructure that have been built to support the road. He will also cover the development of the current scheme design and the legal process to obtain powers to acquire land and start construction.
Julian Lamb, a Director for the A14 Integrated Delivery Team (a joint venture between Costain, Skanska, Balfour Beatty, Atkins & Jacobs), will talk through the construction programme and the main challenges that the contractors have faced in building this extensive scheme. Julian will also cover the unique set-up of the Integrated Delivery Team and will finish with an update on what is now built and what has to come.
