Abstract
Diet and nutrition for the prevention and management of type 2 diabetes.
It is now widely recognised that diet and nutrition play a vital part in the development of chronic disease conditions as well as holding the potential for their amelioration. Type 2 diabetes is one of the biggest global public health challenges, also placing a massive burden in the U.K. on people with diabetes, their families and the wider society. Urgent solutions are needed to help individuals with this condition as well as to prevent those at risk from developing it in the future. Dietary factors can play a pivotal role in the prevention, management and even the possible reversal of type 2 diabetes, but there is also a lot of confusion and noise out there, with conflicting dietary advice coupled with varying quality of scientific evidence as well as vested interests for nutritional claims. This lecture aims to cut through this confusion to provide clarity. I will summarise the recent developments in understanding of this scientific area and highlight key dietary strategies for type 2 diabetes, drawing on research led by my group as well as the work of others.
