Abstract
Impinging liquid jets are widely used in industry and the home for cleaning all manner of materials off walls. We have been working on understanding the flow patterns created by such jets as part of a wider study of increasing the sustainability of cleaning operations. An important feature is the hydraulic jump, considered by Leonardo da Vinci, and familiar to users of kitchen sinks and urinals (hence the title). This talk will explain the science involved, how it can be used, and how to upset some people…
Series This talk is part of the Kelvin Club - The Scientific Society of Peterhouse, Cambridge series.
