Abstract
Interested in building a career in the auction industry? The CUFLBS is thrilled to welcome a group of specialists from Christie’s, one of the most successful auction houses worldwide!
The event will focus on careers in the art world and the variety of paths available to students and young professionals interested in this area. Founded in 1766 by James Christie, the company operates across several departments, ranging from ancient and modern art to luxury products such as watches, designer handbags and wine. In recent years, Christie’s has been the agent behind some of the most exciting sales in the history of the art world. In 2017, Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’ became the most expensive painting ever sold at auction in Christie’s New York salesroom and more recently Jeff Koon’s ‘Rabbit’ achieved the status of most expensive work by a living artist. These results show the prestige achieved by Christie’s over more than two centuries as well the increasing importance of the art market in shaping taste and visual culture.
The event will feature of panel of specialists from Christie’s London office: Jonathan den Otter from Old Master Drawings; Olivia Ghosh from Old Master Paintings; James Baskerville and Stefano Franceschi from Prints & Multiples. The talk will focus on careers in the art world and will be followed by a drinks reception. This is a unique occasion to learn more about the auction business and network with experts from a leading company in this industry.
