Abstract
We study the linear transient growth of optimal perturbations in a horizontally dependent mixing layer-type velocity profile with vertical stratification. Early results show that the perturbations that optimally amplify energy present the biggest amplification for 2D perturbations, which is in agreement with modal theory. However, some characteristics of these perturbations (i.e. enstrophy) are more amplified for 3D perturbations with a certain vertical wavelength. This might be of interest in relation with the spontaneous layering observed in many stratified flows that are initially uniform in the vertical direction.
