Abstract
New advanced materials are required to meet the demands of next-generation nuclear reactors and gas turbines that operate >>1000°C. The high melting points of bcc metals (e.g. W 3422 °C) and relatively low cost make them appealing candidates, however, they lack the required combination of properties. Here we explore the concept of ‘bcc-superalloys’ reinforced by ordered intermetallic precipitates, making analogy to fcc Ni-superalloys, in order to enhance strength & damage tolerance as well as irradiation damage resistance.
