Using personal data in academic research creates a range of legal and ethical challenges for the researcher. This session will provide a short overview of the key things that researchers must do to ensure that their research remains ethical and legal. Specifically it will cover: What is personal data? What do I need to do to comply with data protection legislation? When do I require ethical approval and what level of consent is required?

Specific challenges: Anonymisation and Pseudonymisation, Confidentiality, Online research,

The session will also provide the opportunity for a Q&A on topics of interest to attendees.
