Abstract
An introduction to the scientific study of human and animal language. The talk will cover a range of topics including the question of how language evolved; the ways in which linguistics can reconstruct earlier stages of languages and find out about languages which are no longer spoken; the diversity of language and the range of varieties of English, including dialectal and gender differences; the psychology of language and linguistic profiling.
