Abstract
The Filchner overflow is simulated using a hydrostatic, primitive equation three-dimensional ocean model POLCOMS when the effect of the atmosphere and the ambient water variability is neglected. The Ice Shelf Water (ISW) plume overriding the Filchner Trough is modeled through imposing a 1.6 Sv influx of -2 degrees C water at the southern domain boundary at -74 degrees latitude. Our results show that after entering the domain the ISW plume undergoes instability and then propagates in the form of subplumes and domes. The presence of two submarine ridges effects the plume propagation and shape. The obtained results are compared with available measurement data. The intrinsic temporal variability of the flow is discussed.
