Abstract
Elliptic curves are said to be p-congruent if their p-torsion subgroups are isomorphic as Galois modules. I will discuss work of Cremona and Freitas which shows that for p > 17 there are no nontrivial p-congruences of elliptic curves with conductor less than 500,000, as predicted by a conjecture of Frey and Mazur.
