Scalar tensor theories are of interest as possible explanations for the acceleration of the expansion of the universe, and also as a way to understand possible modifications of gravity. However, it is always necessary to explain why, if such a theory describes our universe, a scalar mediated fifth force has not been seen. I will discuss two possible explanations for this: (1) that the underlying physical theory is scale invariant and (2) that non-linearities in the theory act to suppress, or ‘screen’ the fifth force. I will focus, in particular, on the challenges encounter when trying to embed these mechanisms in effective field theories.
