The so-called “valley of death”, often associated with the development of novel therapeutics, is just as applicable to device development where there can be an energy barrier inhibiting translation of fundamental research into real world availability. There are ways to better bridge this divide, from both a discovery viewpoint and an end-product one, some of these will be highlighted with the hope of aiding future transfer of cutting-edge research to being cutting-edge product.
