Organic aerosols (OA) comprise a large fraction of the total atmospheric aerosol. There is considerable uncertainty about the fractions of primary and secondary organic aerosol (POA and SOA , respectively). In addition, models generally underestimate the measured ambient OA concentrations by factors of up to 100. A major reason for this discrepancy is our incomplete understanding of the formation and transformation of secondary organic aerosol. Smog chambers are a highly suitable means to obtain the required knowledge on SOA . This talk will present an overview of the research performed at the PSI smog chamber. Nucleation as well as various aging processes will be covered.
