Abstract
Over the past century global demand for natural resources has led to unsustainable, socially-unjust and environmentally-disastrous practices of resource extraction. Now in the depths of a climate and ecological crisis, we are faced with the necessity of transitioning from a hydrocarbon-fuelled, mining-intensive society into something altogether more sustainable within the next decade. This panel discussion brings together experts from outside of the geosciences, with the aim of exploring the ramifications of a ‘green transition’ for natural resource extraction. We will discuss questions such as: can extraction ever be sustainable, to what extent are technological developments key to sustainable extraction, and how can new ways of extracting and using natural resources promote social and environmental justice?
