Abstract
In inverse problems, a typical question asks to characterise the range of the underlying `forward map’. I will address this question for a class of nonlinear inverse problems on simple Riemannian surfaces and describe a novel range characterisation that is reminiscent of the Ward correspondence for anti-self-dual Yang-Mills fields, but without solitonic degrees of freedom. The range characterisation turns out to be equivalent, via a novel twistor correspondence, to a non-existence theorem for holomorphic vector bundles on certain complex surfaces, resembling the classical Oka-Grauert theorem.
