Abstract
An important fraction of the Milky Way stellar halo is located within its inner few kiloparsecs. Due to severe extinction and crowding its stellar population content is still poorly known. The SDSS -APOGEE survey has performed the first scrutiny of the detailed chemical compositions of thousands of stars within this region of the Galaxy. I will summarise the main results of this observational effort and discuss their implications to our understanding of the early accretion history of the Milky Way.
