Abstract

In this talk, Prof. Andy Woods will present some of the research into the design of low energy buildings which is being carried out at the BP institute in the university, focussing on the use of natural ventilation and thermal mass to reduce the energy consumption for heating, cooling and ventilating buildings. Examples of modern low energy buildings will be presented and discussed in terms of the principles of air and heat flow through the building.

Prof. Andy Woods read Mathematics at St. Johns College Cambridge, before completing his PhD at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. Having become the Chair in Applied Mathematics at the University of Bristol in 1996, Prof. Woods returned to Cambridge in 2000 to become the head of the BP Institute, where he works in a wide range of areas, including geothermal systems, the dynamics of volcanic systems and the use of natural ventilation to improve the energy efficiency of buildings.
