Abstract
Would you like to go whale watchingโฆ From space? Around the Earth, orbits satellites that can capture images with enough resolution to see whales. At the British Antarctic Survey and with collaborators, we are investigating how satellite images could be used to monitor whales, as it has the potential to help whale conservation by allowing to study regions that are difficult to access by boats or planes. As satellite images can cover large area, it would be more timely efficient to be able to automatically detect whales. With collaborators from NOAA , Dalhousie University, Duke University and the University of Cambridge, we are investigating various AI methods to accomplish this.
