Genus-minimizing surfaces

Abstract
Suppose we’re given a 2-dimensional homology class in a 3 or a 4-dimensional manifold. What can we say about the minimal genus of an embedded surface representing this class? I’ll discuss what we know about this problem, and what it can tell us about the topology of the original manifold.
