Abstract
Conventional construction methods for concrete structures are incompatible with a circular economy. This is due to the monolithic nature of concrete elements: either they are cast in-situ as one large entity or pre-cast elements are grouted together. Because of this, down-cycling as recycled aggregate has become the main method of diverting concrete rubble from the waste stream. However, this has limited potential in reducing the global warming potential of new concrete construction.
This research project aims to provide a technical solution to concrete component reuse for typical flooring systems. This will be done by leveraging the properties of a thin-shell to enable a materially efficient system that requires no grouting for its connections. Manufacturing challenges associated with non-prismatic concrete elements will be tackled through the use of digital fabrication methods, namely a combination of a pin-bed mould, fabric formwork, and robotic concrete spraying.
