Al-Biruni (973-1050) was one of the greatest scholars of the middle ages and a major contributor to the human understanding of a unified world. We will discuss some of his remarkable ideas, the problems he encountered within the historical context of his times, and make a few mathematical remarks on the challenges of geodesy.
