Abstract
We typically aim to describe physical processes by mathematical models that suppose that these processes happen in isolation from the rest of the world. In theories such as general relativity, where spacetime itself is the unknown, this becomes a highly non-trivial endeavour.
In this talk, I will first discuss various notions of isolated systems in GR and show how they lead to differing predictions on the (in principle measurable) late-time asymptotics of solutions to Einstein’s equations. I will then present a scattering construction of a class of physical spacetimes that illustrates how the task of modelling an isolated system can be reduced to understanding the behaviour of the system under consideration in the infinite past.
(no prior knowledge of GR will be assumed)
