Abstract
Hyperbolic groups are a class of groups that are very well understood by geometric group theorists, but they come with some annoying problems. For example, many nice groups that feel as though they should be negatively curved fail to be hyperbolic, for example the mapping class groups of hyperbolic surfaces. For this reason we now have a few ways to generalise the class of hyperbolic groups to allow them to include some of these examples.
One such generalisation is Acylindrical hyperbolicity, which can be shown to be the class of groups that act in a particular way on metric spaces quasi-isometric to trees. In this talk I will define this concept, and discuss the problem of restricting this definition to only include actions on trees themselves.
