Rubisco activity and the response of crop leaf photosynthesis to shade

Abstract
The enzyme Rubisco has a central role in photosynthetic carbon assimilation. Conditions of intermittent shade, which are experienced by plant leaves in crop canopies, affect its activity. Rubisco activity is maximised in saturating light and decreases in shade, but changes in Rubisco activity lag behind the changes in light intensity that they track. From a crop improvement perspective, how much and how quickly does Rubisco activity change in response to shade, and what is the impact on crop leaf photosynthetic efficiency? Furthermore, when working with crops like cowpea, that are important for the food security of burgeoning populations in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, can we identify genetic variation for photosynthetic efficiency under fluctuating light that could be used to help improve crop productivity?
