Abstract
Uncertainty surrounding how structures interact with soil remains a key barrier to optimising cost, time and environmental savings for underground construction. This is particularly the case for large-diameter caissons used for the water and wastewater industry where soil-structure interactions critically affect the construction process. A recent EPSRC -funded project (‘FOCUS’) sought to tackle these uncertainties using new measurement, monitoring and feedback systems by combining fibre optic sensing with machine learning. This seminar provides an overview of the project using a recent UK case history including the soil-structure insights extracted from the monitored data and the resulting impact on industry.
