What can lab-generated earthquakes tell us about natural earthquakes?

Abstract
‘Rapid urbanisation is increasing the risk of seismic hazards to human populations, therefore understanding the origin and mechanics of earthquakes is becoming ever more important. The most uncertain term in seismic hazard models is the earthquake source term, which represents the area of slip during earthquakes and controls their magnitude and frequency.
‘Lab analogue experiments can simulate earthquakes under carefully controlled conditions and with high precision measurement of properties. In this talk, I will show how lab-generated earthquakes can give insight on natural fault behaviour, ranging from aseismic creep to earthquake slip.’
