Abstract
Impact cratering experiments are performed using a Carbopol gel drop as the impactor and a deep Carbopol gel pool as the target. The ejecta curtain that arises upon impact grows in height and diameter with time until it finally collapses and gets deposited on the pool surface. A qualitative study of the instabilities that arise at the rim of the ejecta curtain will lead to the categorisation of the ejecta shape into 5 regimes according to a single dimensionless parameter that combines the inertial stress, the viscous stress and the yield stress. A detailed study of the ejecta sheet dimensions and the angle with the horizontal will show that the dynamics of this yield-stress fluid ejecta differ from those of water or granular ejecta.
