Abstract
Stereotypes may serve as judgment standards against which we evaluate individual members of stereotyped groups. This can lead to contrast effects in subjective judgments, as the use of within-category referents means that members of negatively stereotyped groups are judged relative to lower standards than members of positively stereotyped groups. I describe evidence of gender- and race-based shifting standards in judgments of competence, and discuss the role of stereotype-based standard shifts in interpersonal communication and in the translation of feedback.
