MMVW02 - Collective Behaviour

Agent-based models provide simulations of animal groups that navigate and reach consensus decisions between different available targets. During these simualtions, and as observed in experiments, there seem to be bifurcations in the trajectories where the behavior switches between motion along the compromise direction (average of several targets’ directions) and a decision to move towards one of the targets. We present a simple spin-based model for this collective directional decision-making process. The same model is then shown to describe successfully the directional decision-making of a single animal, across several species. Finally, we implement this model on the individual level for a group of animals (in a fish school, for example).
