Human sexual dimorphism, and the division of labour and social roles based upon it, feature strongly in many of the stories constructed by language evolution scholars, while conversely stories about evolution feature strongly in recent discourse on male-female linguistic differences. In this talk I consider how these accounts connect, or fail to connect, with the evidence of sociolinguistic research on the relationship between language and gender.
