Vector Genomics and the Malaria Cell Atlas

Abstract
Malaria is a major global health problem that disproportionately affects Africa, where it kills more than half a million children annually. The parasites that cause the disease are transmitted only by Anopheles mosquitoes. In Africa, there are four different Anopheles mosquito species that are responsible for most human malaria transmission. We have generated whole genome sequencing data for thousands of wild-caught individual mosquitoes across Africa and this data resource now comprises one of the largest population genomic datasets for any multicellular organism. I will present an overview of vector population genomics across Africa, as well as work we are doing on targeted sequencing to ID Anopheles species and the Plasmodium they transmit, improving reference genomes for malaria control, and the Mali edition of the Malaria Cell Atlas.
