The bulk-boundary correspondence is a key concept in understanding quantum phases of matter. It relates topological features of the bulk of a quantum many-body system to exotic boundary phenomena. I will explore some simple models of one-dimensional chains that exhibit this correspondence; examples of symmetry-protected topological phases of matter. I will explain how these ideas can persist even at phase transitions and in the presence of long-range (algebraically decaying) interactions.
