Abstract
This paper examines the nature and extent of Anglo-Scottish commercial exchange over the course of regal and political Union. It analyses the connection between the chronology of political incorporation and the processes of economic and commercial interaction between the two kingdoms through a quantitative analysis of trade between north-eastern England and southern and eastern Scotland. The consideration of trade goes beyond the measurement of its volume to chart its changing composition and how this related to national and regional economies, international commerce and political relations. In doing so it highlights significant regional variations within the national historiography of Union.
