Abstract
If dark matter is composed of axions, then axion stars are expected to be abundant in the Universe. In this talk, I will demonstrate in fully non-linear (3+1) numerical relativity the instability of compact axion stars due to the electromagnetic Chern-Simons term. The coupling of the axion to electromagnetism forms the basis of various axion detection experiments. I will show that above a critical coupling constant, compact axion stars are unstable, decaying into a less massive, less compact, remnant. Finally, Iβll address this instability in the context of axion star mergers.
